Universal 6-Bolt Steering Wheel Screw Kit with hub adapter and aftermarket steering wheel

The Complete Steering Wheel Upgrade Kit: Wheel, Hub Adapter & Bolt Kit Explained

Buy an aftermarket steering wheel on its own and there's a good chance it'll sit in the box for a week while you track down the other two parts you actually needed. A wheel doesn't bolt straight onto a factory column — you need a hub adapter to mount it, and you need the right bolts to hold it there. Skip either one and you're either stuck, or worse, driving around on hardware that was never rated for the job.

This is the combo we get asked about most, so here's the straight version: what each part does, how to pick one, and how they go together.

Why a Wheel Alone Isn't a Kit

Your factory steering column ends in a splined shaft built to accept the OEM wheel and nothing else. An aftermarket wheel has a universal 6-bolt pattern on the back, so you need a hub adapter (sometimes called a boss kit) in between to bridge the two. Most wheels ship with generic bolts in the box, and most of the time they're fine — but they're not always the right length, thread pitch, or finish to match a quick release hub, which is where a dedicated bolt kit earns its keep.

Step One: The Wheel

Pick this first — everything else is sized around it. If you're still deciding on diameter, dish depth or grip material, our steering wheel buyer's guide covers all of it in detail. Every wheel we stock, from the Vertex Speed Suede to the BRIDE POWER, uses the same universal 6-bolt mounting pattern, so it'll work with any hub adapter and bolt kit in this guide.

Step Two: The Hub Adapter

A hub adapter connects your factory column to the wheel's 6-bolt pattern, and if you go the quick release route, it also lets you snap the wheel off entirely — handy for a deep dish wheel in a tight cabin, and a genuine deterrent against theft. The NRG Gen 2.0 Quick Release Hub Adapter is our most popular option, with a ball-lock mechanism that stays tight with zero play. Every hub adapter we sell is vehicle-generic on the wheel side, but you'll still need a model-specific boss kit for your particular car to adapt it to the factory column — check compatibility before you buy, not after.

Step Three: Don't Reuse Old Bolts

Universal 6-Bolt Steering Wheel Screw Kit in assorted anodised colours

This is the part people forget until they're halfway through installing everything else. Bolts corrode, strip, or simply go missing between the wheel box and the garage floor, and reusing a mismatched set on the one bolt pattern holding your steering wheel to the column isn't where you want to cut corners. Our new Universal 6-Bolt Steering Wheel Screw Kit is a matched 6-piece set sized for the standard aftermarket bolt pattern, compatible with MOMO, NRG, OMP, Sparco and Vertex-style hubs. It's also available in colour-matched anodised finishes — Flat Blue, Flat Red, Flat Purple, Flat Green and Neo Chrome — so you can finish the install with hardware that actually matches the rest of your interior instead of whatever bolts happened to be in the box.

How It All Bolts Together

Installation order matters less than doing each step properly, but this is the sequence we'd follow:

  • Fit the boss kit to your factory column and confirm the indicator/horn wiring lines up before you go any further.
  • Mount the hub adapter to the boss kit and torque it to spec — this is not a step to eyeball.
  • Bolt the wheel to the hub using your 6-bolt screw kit, torqued evenly in a cross pattern rather than one bolt at a time.
  • Check for play by hand before you ever start the car. Any looseness at this stage gets fixed now, not on the road.

FAQ

Do all aftermarket steering wheels use the same bolt pattern?
Yes — the universal 6-bolt pattern is the industry standard for aftermarket wheels, which is why one screw kit works across MOMO, NRG, OMP, Sparco and Vertex-style hubs.

Can I just reuse the bolts that came with my old wheel?
You can if they're in good condition and the right length for your specific hub, but a fresh matched set removes the guesswork and gives you a colour-matched finish.

Do I need a boss kit as well as a hub adapter?
Yes. The hub adapter mounts the wheel; the boss kit is what's specific to your car and adapts the hub to your factory column. Most retailers, us included, sell these as two separate parts.
